president – incite ventures, vancouver, BC 2005 – present

Consulting and advisory services to early stage technology companies with corporate strategy, product vision, market entry and commercialization. Clients have included:

  • Wireless infrastructure company. Assisted the company with market research into competitors, product differentiation and feature/function trends.
  • Wireless application technology start-up. Fulfilled role as VP Marketing and Products to define company direction and product portfolio, and assist with business development with wireless operators, handset vendors, operating system vendors, and application partners.
  • Distributed wireless meter reading technology company. Assisted in defining expansion of product line beyond base electricity meter products.
  • New Media startup – created a new media concept that merged social networking, television and music into a new format that defines a new level of viewer interaction and content delivery.

vice-president, business development & products – EQO communications, Inc., richmond, BC 2006 – 2007

Reporting to the CEO, drove commercialization of a global mobile VoIP, messaging and social networking service. Responsibility for product specification, pricing, website, customer acquisition strategy and product marketing launch.

  • Defined first generation of a mobile web-services product to allow for free international calling, messaging and instant messaging from mobile phones. Managed end user trials, market research and technology exploration.
  • Defined roadmap and feature-set from VoIP and messaging to bridge social networks to mobile phones.
  • Created the online customer acquisition process and website content and structure.
  • Led Business Development and product concepts with social networking partners and mobile operators.

director, marketing – sierra wireless inc., richmond, BC 1999 – 2005

Reporting to the Senior Vice-President and CTO, directly led a team of six professionals and indirectly over 30 R&D and operational staff. Global responsibility for the business/consumer product line including product management, product marketing and branding, channel strategy, and business development. Assisted with corporate strategy and product portfolio planning. Budget $4+M/year.

  • Launched the corporation into a major new market segment:
  • Led the creation of two generations of smartphone and software products through market research, capture of product requirements, and cross-functional teamwork.
  • Successfully created a complex, highly-leveraged partner business through identification, and selection of key development and marketing partners including Microsoft, Intel, Gartner Group (Market Research), Ziba Design (Industrial Design), Mitac (Manufacturing), Interbrand (Brand Development) and DDB (Advertising).
  • Created a leveraged “sales” organization through creative seeding and promotional offers with key partners and influencers including Microsoft, Intel and Handango.
  • Increased market appeal by creating a complete end-user and enterprise “solution” through due diligence, contract negotiation and creation of partnerships with technology and software partners including Microsoft, Intel, Ziba Design, Tao, Zi Corp, Jataayu and Certicom.
  • Increased product visibility and sell-through by:
  • Successfully leading the on-time, under-budget creation of a brand strategy and architecture, portfolio naming schema, brand kit, and North American and European advertising campaign.
  • Establishing a major, global mainstream media presence through development and management of a thoughtful, targeted, and clear corporate launch plan.
  • Creating product marketing campaigns and programs with key partners and developing mainstream distribution channels.
  • Successfully managed, within financial parameters, a multi-million dollar marketing budget for over four years in a complex, and constantly changing financial environment.

director of marketing – sierra wireless inc., richmond, BC 2000 – 2001

Reporting to the COO, led market development activities, through a team of six, including managing partnerships and creating marketing programs with partners. In conjunction with senior management team, managed a number of strategic initiatives. Assisted with strategy and product portfolio planning.

  • Created leadership position in the enterprise segment for wireless products through creation/management of key partners including Compaq/HP, Lucent, Qualcomm, Microsoft, Citrix and IBM.
  • Created a competitive, first-mover advantage in the embedded wireless modules business through creation and negotiation of a joint development agreement with Microsoft to develop an interface between the Windows Mobile Operating System and CDMA technology.
  • Added over $20M in revenue and enhanced the competitive position of the company through the acquisition of the embedded modules division of Qualcomm.

product/business development manager, sierra wireless inc., richmond, BC 1998 – 2000

Reporting to the Senior Vice-President, Marketing, managed a new and complex marketing and sales relationship with Sprint PCS. Responsible for product management, training, collateral development, and marketing programs with Sprint PCS and partners.

  • Generated over $15M in revenue, and exceeded business case by 2x, through successful launch of the company’s first CDMA product – the AirCard 510 and management of Sprint PCS relationship.
  • Created mindshare and new sales channels for corporate products by:
  • Doubling the number of partners in the industry-leading WirelessReady Alliance partner program to over 30 members. Initiated business development efforts with Compaq, Microsoft and Dell.
  • Successfully creating a marketing and sales partnership with Microsoft and Compaq to develop and launch a wireless solution for Compaq’s first Microsoft PocketPC device.

consulting manager, customer connections group – ernst & young/cap gemini, vancouver, BC 1992 – 1998

Part of an international team working on customer strategy assignments in North America and Europe in the high tech, consumer products, and energy markets. Consulted on strategy, process reengineering, Internet strategy, identifying new product and market opportunities, and sales/marketing organization issues.

  • Generated revenues of over $1M through creation and leadership of a Western Canadian Customer Relationship Management (strategy, technology solutions) practice. Example assignments include:
  • Assisted in the establishment of a new services business for a $1B energy company. Developed business plan and business case.
  • Lead the development of a new retail consumer business for a large energy company including development of new products and services, organizational structure, and sales/marketing strategies.
  • Completed a marketing and sales strategy for a multinational company across six subsidiaries to eliminate customer confusion and grow revenues.
